Do I classify as an emerging artist?

An emerging artist can be defined as an artist who has been professionally exhibiting for under five years but at this point is not yet classified in the industry as established. There is no age limitation. Artists who are able to make a full-time living producing art are classified as professional artists, or mid-career artists. tinygold is an organization whose main focus is on supporting emerging artists.   Artists represented by galleries are welcome to propose to tinygold, provided they are classified as emerging and an agreement is made between the artist and their representing gallery.

Why is Tales from the Cold Ghost held during winter?

We stage the exhibition series during winter because we want to show both local and interstate audiences that the Gold Coast is more than just a city with an avid beach and party culture. There are artists that choose to live and make work here, and there are visitors who come here to participate in cultural events. Therefore our project aims to challenge the notion that the Gold Coast is a cultural dive by creating opportunities for this city, mainly towards promoting the city’s independent-arts iconography.

Why are there commission and submission fees this year?

tinygold is an artist-run initiative that runs on a voluntary basis, which means organizers do not receive any payment for our administration and event organization, which equates to 5 months of unpaid work. We also operate without government funding or financial donations, therefore we are heavily reliant on the support and understanding of all artists who want the project to continue.

Previous donations and submission fees enabled us to stage the second tinygold show, and introduce new audiences to exciting new works produced by the artists living in our community. This year we are aiming to stage a bigger exhibition, therefore to be able to achieve this we absolutely need the support of artists and the community! Any commission taken from last year’s show will be absorbed into organizing Tales from the Cold Ghost III. This is within guidelines of the artist-run initiative regulation.

Where does my $15.00 submission fee go to?

Every dollar from your submission fee goes directly towards helping with costs associated with staging the event. Specifically, this includes:

paid advertisement in street presses and art publications, postage, stationery and bills associated with artist and media communication, photographer and video documentation fee for exhibition, printing of opening night programs, loans and purchases of equipment and materials, design and printing of tales from the cold ghost III catalogue and invites, labour for writing press releases, didactic panels and artist information leaflets, maintenance and restitution of the exhibition space, opening night catering and utensils etc.

What are your fee options?

Payments are accepted via Money Order.

For bank deposit, online banking or cheque payment please email tinygoldATgmail.com for info.

It says in your Guidelines that artists can submit one-to-three works, but that this amount is negotiable. I would like to submit five works for consideration, as they are in a series. Is this ok?

The amount of works you’d like to propose is up to you, provided you clarify which works you are interested in exhibiting in Cold Ghost II, and which are ‘representative’ of your practice. Please clarify which works are available to exhibit in tales from the cold ghost. Only send works you feel will benefit your submission. We want to provide each artist with proper exposure, as well as accommodate a successful group exhibition context. Therefore we cannot guarantee to exhibit all the works you submit. As a guide, artists can submit one minimum to seven maximum works for the show, but this is negotiable depending on nature of work, as we understand several artists work with ephemeral, large-scale and series elements.

Do I qualify to enter Tales from the Cold Ghost if I live in Tweed, NSW?

We understand there are artists who live in Northern New South Wales, so we accept these artists as long as they actively participate in art events based in Queensland. Artists eligible to enter include those residing in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Tweed, Murwillimbah, Byron Bay and other rural Qld / Northern NSW areas.

I’m part of a collaborative group. We’d like to propose our works for Cold Ghost II. Are we eligible?

Yes, collaborations are accepted, provided members of the group are emerging, and the artists are based in Queensland. Submissions by a collaborative group need to follow the same criteria. E-mail us for any fine lines.

I would like to volunteer for TFCG III. How do I go about doing this?

tinygold shows require volunteers to help us out during Opening Night on a range of sections, including event photography, sales, food and beverage and security. We provide our volunteers with incentives, such as merchandise kindly donated by our sponsors. tinygold shows require 15 volunteer staff. Contact us if you would like to be a volunteer for our shows.

What is your commission rate?

While commercial galleries receive 50% commission for sold works, we have requested a low fee of 20% this year. This ensures that the prices of your work remain affordable and accessible. Again, any fee from this exhibition goes back into organizing future tinygold projects.

What should I include in my CV or bio?

A CV is your artist resume, which should list basic information about your education, industry activities and previous exhibition history. An artist bio is just like your artist resume, but in a written format. The bio serves as information and background about you as a practicing artist. For various examples of artist CVs, statements and bios go to Artworkers and click on the artist database. We are also available to help you out with any queries or predicaments regarding your submission.

I am represented by a gallery. Can I still exhibit at TFCG III?

We mainly exhibit the works of unrepresented artists. However we welcome represented artists so long as they are early-career, and that their gallery permits their participation in the show. It is up to the artist to inform the gallery of their intention to exhibit elsewhere and sort out commission agreements with other parties.

How do I price my work?

The considered amount of pricing your work is based on the amount of time you’ve spent producing it, the costs of the materials associated with creating it, the level of workmanship or experience, and the portfolio of your arts practice so far. More info can be found in the Australian Business Arts Foundation site. tinygold’s main aim is to promote an artist’s practice and give artists room for experimentation and progress, so we also exhibit works that are not available for sale. Please note in your application if you do not intend to sell your works in our show.

Can I email you images of works to see what you think, and submit a proposal letter later?

We regularly receive e-mails from artists, and while we try our best to address each question and look at all your works online we feel that it is fair for all artists interested in exhibiting at a tinygold show, that they submit works in a unison format. This means each artist is expected to fully read the submission criteria and submit all materials as detailed in the guidelines. This makes it easier for us to sort through submissions and to file your work for future reference.

Can I be included in your mailing list?

Of course, babyhorse!! Just email us with the subject heading ‘Mailing List’ and drop your postal/email deets.

I am interested in sponsorship partnerships. How do I get more information about tinygold?

We welcome and appreciate sponsorship incentives and in-kind donations. Without our sponsors we would not be able to continue this project. Please contact us asap on tinygold [ at ] gmail.com for sponsorship kits.

Is there an entry fee to attend the exhibition?

No, our shows don’t require an entry fee. But we welcome donations.

Will there be an afterparty on the Opening Night for TFCG III?

Yes, there sure is!! Details will be released soon.
